html & server Table control

Dear all
Using Visual Studio 2010 to design a web form I have included a table with cells containing hyperlinks with the text as numbers, 1, 2, etc. When the number is clicked the width of the cell increases significantly, say from 75px to 200px. If the pointer is not exactly over the number the hyperlink is not activated. However by holding the mouse down an manouvering the pointer over the number the link is activated successfully.

I do not want the width of the cell to increase, any suggestions? Is this a ASP.net "feature"?

Please note:
1. This happens if I use the html table control or the ASP table server control. 2. The problem doesn't occur using Expression Web v4

******* This problem is caused when the css class for the anchor is set to a:link instead of a ********
